English as an Additional Language

EAL support in reading

At Camrose we have a number of children for whom English is an Additional Language (EAL). Some of these children may find reading tasks challenging and therefore the following resources and strategies are utilised:

  • Bilingual (dual-language) reading books, including familiar/traditional stories
  • Pictorial dual language dictionaries for initial stage English learners
  • Dual language dictionaries
  • Simplified texts
  • Visuals
  • Picture books
  • PENpal – a talking pen that can read stories in English or in up to 26 other languages
  • Small group reading interventions using the ‘Usborne English Learners Elementary First Reading’ phonics based reading scheme to support initial EAL learners combined with specific strategies to support new to English readers
  • Pre-teaching of class based text during withdrawal intervention to support in class reading tasks
  • Scaffolding targeted support for comprehension and inference deduction activities
  • Parent workshops are held to share with parents effective techniques and strategies to support their child with reading at home in English or in their first (mother) language
  • ‘Families Love Books’ free workshops to encourage parent and child interaction at home, to develop an enjoyment of books
