Camrose Primary School

Key Stage 1

Key Stage 1

Book Bands

The school adopts the National System Of Banded Reading Books that match the decoding and comprehension ability of each individual child.  These include a range of fiction and non-fiction books from different schemes, including Oxford Reading Tree, Scholastic and Project X.

Classroom Reading

Children read for a variety of purposes in school, individually and in groups. Reading comprehension lessons take place weekly and children are heard reading by adults on a regular basis. Literacy work is often based around a class text.

Some children need extra support with their reading and receive regular interventions with our highly skilled support staff. They use different resources, including “Scholastic Connectors” to provide targeted support to accelerate learning. Higher ability readers also receive some small group support in order to further develop their reading and comprehension skills.

Home Reading

Children are given a “Reading Record” book to support reading at home. Parents and carers are encouraged to read daily with their children and comment in their record books. This encourages a good partnership between the teacher, the home carer and the child to develop their reading skills and strategies.
