Year 4 National Curriculum requirements

Pupils should be taught to

  1. develop a range of personal strategies for learning new and irregular words*
  2. develop a range of personal strategies for spelling at the point of composition*
  3. develop a range of strategies for checking and proofreading spellings after writing*
  4. use further prefixes and suffixes and understand how to add them (English Appendix 1)
  5. spell further homophones
  6. spell words that are often misspelt (English Appendix 1)
  7. place the possessive apostrophe accurately in words with regular plurals
  8. (for example, girls’, boys’) and in words with irregular plurals (for example, children’s)
  9. use the first two or three letters of a word to check its spelling in a dictionary
  10. write from memory simple sentences, dictated by the teacher, that include words
  11. and punctuation taught so far
  12. Proofread for spelling errors.
